The first artificial wind-chill methods as used by animals in nature was duplicated by royalty and wealthy persons of early Assyria and Egypt, who employed slaves or servants waving large leaves to cool them down on hot days. Many centuries later, in 1882, Diehl introduced his invention of the electric ceiling fan. His device was a bubble-blade adaptation of the well known belt driven fan with an in-built electric motor. By the end of the 1880s, the Diehl Electric” was sweeping the country, and by the late 1920s, no self-respecting restaurant, drug store, ice cream shop, or elegant dining room, was without a ceiling fan as part of their decor and method of ventilation.

Ceiling fans can reduce cooling costs. In the summer, a breeze created by a good ceiling fan can make you feel between two and six degrees cooler.

There are many ceiling fan designs and styles, and it is important that one considers the following options carefully before purchasing a ceiling fan:

Fan Size: It is important that the fan will fit in your room. You must consider the height of the ceiling and be sure that the blades have ample space in which to spin. It is recommended that the blades are no closer than two feet from the nearest wall.

Fan Motors: Good ceiling fans have a motor size and precision ground motor windings matched to the length of the blades. This ensures that the fan moves the air efficiently, even with continuous use, and uses less energy to run. If the motor or blades are improperly balanced, vibrations will occur, even at slow speed. Fans that are built for outdoor use have motors that are specially designed to withstand moisture and fluctuations in temperature.

Fan Blades: Fan blades come in all sorts of wonderful shapes and patterns. However it is important that the fan blades chosen will offer a balanced performance for a stable operation. Fan blades should be protected with a sealant to avoid the warping effects of moisture. Fan blade pitches range from 8 to 15 degrees – the higher the pitch, the more air the fan will circulate at slower speeds. The number of blades in a ceiling fan ranges from three to five, but this number has little effect on the amount of cool air the fan produces.

Fan Mounts: There are three main varieties of ceiling fan mounts downrod mount, flush mount, and tri-mount. Fan Downrods can come at any length and are specially designed for rooms with higher ceilings, bringing the circulating blades of the fan down into the living space where it is most effective. A flush mount is designed for rooms with lower ceilings, and eliminates the need for a downrod. A tri-mount allows one to install a fan in a room for the best circulation whether there is a low, high or angled ceiling.

Patio ceiling fans are another important type of ceiling fan, and although generally less common than indoor ceiling fans, patio ceiling fans are considered important in the warmer, moister regions of the world.

There are a few reasons to install a ceiling fan in your house. They really bring style to your residence and wooden homes look impressive with the addition of an elegant polished wood blade fan to match their walls and wood flooring. Dining areas look excellent with a light color fan blade that matches the dining room table and crystal globes on each light bulb will reflect off your crockery and glassware. Each dinner will be brighter with the additional light in your dining environment and you will enjoy every summertime meal with a cool breeze flowing into the dining area.

Fans bring comfort to family rooms and dens too. A ceiling fan over your favorite chair will make watching TV, knitting, or reading a more cooler and more tranquil experience with the terrific reading light provided by the fan.

When you are ready to purchase your ceiling fan, consider whether you will be installing the fan yourself or whether you will be hiring someone else to set it up for you. Take into account that if you employ a professional to install it, you will be paying extra cash. The fan will include an instruction manual giving directions on exactly how it should be installed, but if you don’t have any wiring skills you should definitely hire someone or get a skilled friend to help you for free. The installation should only take a day, and your home will be cool in no time.

Operating the fan is simple; there will either be a short chain within hand reach that turns on the fan and controls the speeds and next to that, another chain that controls the light switch. Alternatively, you may have a model that does not have the chain, which you can just operate from a switch on the wall. The best ceiling fans will have settings for low, medium, and high speeds, each accessed by an effortless tug of the chain or click of the switch.

You will need to clean the blades of your ceiling fan every week to insure that it gives off the best airflow. The dustiest part of the ceiling fan will be the top part above the blades which you can easily clean with a vacuum with a hose attachment to reach those high spots. If you do not have a vacuum, just use a cloth or paper towel with some sort of non-abrasive cleaning spray or polish.

In summary, a ceiling fan can really brighten your home, providing cool air, and making an elegant addition when you match it with your room colors. Installation can be cheap and easy and a weekly clean will make sure that your fan serves you well for years to come.

Ceiling fans are a practical and decorative addition to any room. They can be used indoors and out for an attractive yet useful feature. Choosing which one is ideal is dependent on the type of use as well as your individual style and taste. They are available at decorating centers, home improvement stores and even department stores. They are affordable and can help reduce energy costs.

Style

There are many ceiling fans available in a variety of styles and sizes to suit any d cor and any size room. For a modern look, choose a sleek, monochromatic fan with three or four blades. The clean lines add a bit of elegance and dramatic flair to any room. Choose a wooden fan in a solid color or steel bladed fan for the ultra modern look. If you have a more traditional style, opt for a wooden fan with minimal ornamentation and with four or five blades. Victorian style fans often come in rich dark words with ornate decorations and gilding. For a child s room, you might choose a themed fan such as a baseball fan or a fan depicting storybook characters.

Functionality

Most fans are suitable for use indoors but if using it on a patio or place open to the elements, it is important to choose one specifically suited for outdoor use. They are treated to withstand temperature variations, water and sun. Choose a fan that allows dual direction for use in warn and cold weather. Changing the direction of the blades will help heat or warm a room as necessary. Some people prefer the flexibility of having various speed capabilities. Most fans will allow for at least two or three speeds, but there are fans available with only one set speed. Fans typically include lighting or the possibility to add light. Up lights will direct light toward the ceiling for a soft glow, adding romance and sophistication to a room. Almost all lights have the ability to add traditional lighting to help illuminate the room. Choose a design that fits the fan style.

Installation

Ceiling fans should be eight to nine feet off the ground for optimum effectiveness. Lower ceilings can use a flush mount system, which places the fan tight against the ceiling. For higher ceilings the use of a down rod is necessary. This helps extend the space between where the fan should be and the ceiling. If your ceiling is sloped, use an angled mount to level your fan. When installing a fan it is important to turn off power to the room for safety. Follow the directions included closely to ensure everything is set up properly. Most modern homes are pre wired and no electrical work will be necessary aside from hooking it up. However, if this is not the case, some minor electrical work may be needed. If unsure, most home improvement centers will install for you at a minimal charge.

Ceiling fans are a great addition to any home and can add to the d cor of any style of room. From fun to elaborate, there is a variety of fan suitable for every style. Choose the fan that best suits your taste and provides the functionality desired. It can help reduce heating and cooling costs by re-circulating the air in a room, lessening the time needed for air conditioners and heaters to work.

Ceiling fans can be a great way to increase the energy savings in your home while providing a comfortable living environment. Offering more features and functionality than a standard light, many ceiling fans can easily be installed in the same location as and replace your light fixture. Ceiling fan energy efficiency can vary greatly between ceiling fans and the accessories added to them such as light kits.

Without a typical light kit ceiling fan energy efficiency is at an optimal level. However, installing a standard ceiling fan light kit will draw more energy than a ceiling fan motor. Adding an Energy Star rated lighting kit to your ceiling fan will cut the energy used in half compared to that of a standard light kit. Additional energy savings can be made by purchasing a ceiling fan with an Energy Star rating which can move the air up to 20% more efficiently than a standard fan. Many leading manufacturers offer both ceiling fans and light kits with the Energy Star rating and prominently display it.

Additional energy savings can be had by simply turning the ceiling fan and lights off when you leave the room. Using the lights and fan in a reasonable manner, constantly adjusting the speed of the blades and turning the lights on and off repeatedly will use more energy than letting the fan run at a constant level.

I want to draw attention to your ceiling. Take a look at it. Ceilings are an often neglected area of the room when it comes time to redecorate (or repair). There are so many things that you can do too, that are inexpensive, yet provide the simple elegance that speaks to your style. Choose decorative ceiling medallions, crown molding, ceiling domes, rosettes, or panel molding, just to name a few. Three of my favorite ways to accent a ceiling: ceiling medallions, ceiling domes, and crown molding.

One of the easiest and least time-consuming projects is the installation of a ceiling medallion. Although in the past they were made from plaster, today these decorative ornaments are made of lightweight polyurethane foam. This makes them much easier to handle. Ceiling medallions are used to draw attention to chandeliers and light fixtures, or to enhance crown molding. They can also be combined with a rosette and used to decorate an otherwise plain ceiling. You can use these architectural ornaments as wall decorations. Use several small ones in the hallway. Ceiling medallions are versatile and come in many styles and sizes. They can be painted to match any room. Ceiling medallions are one of the most popular architectural details.

Ceiling domes are similar to ceiling medallions in that they can transform any room into a work of art. However, they are larger and actually recessed into the ceiling, necessitating that they be planned for at the time of construction. Ceiling domes effectively enhance a foyer, dining room, living room, or even the bathroom.

Crown molding, also referred to as crown moulding, or cornice, is probably THE most important architectural element used to define any interior space. Most of today s interior designers agree that every room benefits from the use of crown molding treatment. Crown molding smoothes the transition from wall to ceiling and does much to define the architectural style of a room. The size and style of crown molding used may vary widely, from a simple cove in a farmhouse kitchen to a large built-up cornice in a grand entry.

These are just a few of the architectural designs and accents you can use to enhance the overall experience of all who enter into your home. Just don t forget the ceiling!

Christmas is without a doubt one of the most cherished and celebrated times of the year. Most people love to anticipate the coming of Christmastime because of all the great things that Christmas means to them. One of the best ways to anticipate, celebrate, and make the most of the holidays is the use of Christmas decorations.

There is nothing lovelier than entering a house at Christmastime that is filled with beautiful Christmas decorations that reflect the love of the family and the values of the season. Nothing is more special than seeing a family Christmas tree filled with homemade ornaments a strings of popcorn that the children have spent hours making. Christmas decorations can transform even the most bland house into a warm and life-filled house during the holidays and that is why I love Christmas decorations so much.

Spending a Saturday putting up Christmas decorations can be a great way for a family to spend time together and build lasting family traditions at the same time. Children will learn to enjoy the work that goes into making their home beautiful during the holidays if they are included in putting up the Christmas decorations. Spend time teaching your kids the importance of Christmas and the different things that your Christmas decorations symbolize for your family. Use the hours of decorating to teach important faith and life lessons. Once you have worked hard at putting up Christmas decorations all day, spend the evening watching old Christmas films and eating pizzas.

Do you have any memories of making your childhood home beautiful with Christmas decorations? When I grew up, there was a rule in our home that we couldn’t pick out a tree or put up any Christmas decorations unless everyone in the family was home. Even after my older siblings went to college we continued this special tradition. It has been fun to pass down a similar tradition to my own family.

My children love to anticipate the day that we will go to the tree farm as a family and cut down the perfect tree. They love to help get the boxes of Christmas decorations out of the basement. And they especially love to sort through the Christmas tree ornaments and choose the ones they want to place on the limbs of our tree.

Before the next holiday season rolls around consider ways that you and your family can celebrate by making new traditions or reviving old ones as you beautify your home with Christmas decorations.

Heat and humidity can certainly bring down productivity in the workplace. You can make conditions more comfortable for work by installing central air conditioners if the work area is large, in which case one small air conditioner would not be enough. So, if you wish to cool the entire house or the office you need to install central air conditioners.

Normally central air conditioners works on the principle of transferring heat from one station to the other with the help of a transporting media which is a refrigerant commonly known as Freon. There are two parts in central air conditioners as it is a split system. One part is the air handler which is placed inside the home and the other part is the condensing unit which is located outdoors.

In order to cool the inside of your home, the central air conditioners remove the heat from the air inside and transfer it to the air outside. The indoor part of the system contains a refrigerant coil across which the indoor air is passed and then it is released outside. This process brings down the temperature inside to the desired level as per the thermostat setting.

Useful hints for buying central air conditioners
You should choose the system that would suit your local climate and the total cooling load. You can either go in for evaporative coolers that are useful in hot and arid regions such as the southwest or you can choose the compressor-driven central air conditioners.

You will also have to work out the size of the system needed.

You should look for a SEER rating higher than 12.0 when you are looking for a central air conditioner.

If you have ducts for an existing forced-air heating system, the central air conditioner system could be linked to these ducts, depending upon their size and the relative heating and cooling loads of your home. You can take the advice of a good HVAC contractor in this regard.

For efficient operation of a central air conditioner, proper sizing and installation are essential. It will be difficult to regulate humidity with too large a unit and if the unit is too small, you might not get adequate cooling on very hot days. Efficiency can come down with improper unit location, lack of duct insulation, improper duct sealing, and incorrect refrigerant charge.

Important aspects which should be considered while buying a central air conditioner are: provision of a fan-only switch, a filter check-light and an automatic-delay fan switch. You should also choose a central air conditioner that does not make too much noise.

If the outdoor (compressor) unit of the central air conditioners needs to be replaced, you should find one, which will be compatible with the existing indoor (blower coil) unit. An old blower coil would not be suitable for a highly efficient outdoor unit.

It is necessary to get an electrician to assess your home’s electrical supply such as the voltage and amperage capacity before installing central air conditioners, as it needs a constant 230-volt circuit and 20 to 50 amps of power.

To ensure the best performance from your central heating system it is important to balance the radiators. A simple but important DIY job

Central Heating, DIY, Balancing Radiators

In order to ensure an even distribution of hot water to the radiators in a system you’ll need to ‘balance the system’. Often the radiators near to the boiler/pump would tend to be warmer than the radiators further away, balancing the system will even out the flow of the hot water.

To do this we use the lockshield valve which is normally hidden under a push on cover at one end of the radiator. Adjusting these valves will regulate the flow of water to the radiator. By partially closing the valves, flow to the radiators nearest the boiler can be more limited than to those further away. To reduce the water temperature at the outlet pipe, the lock shield is closed; to increase the temperature the valve is opened up.

The idea is to get temperature drop across each radiator to be about 12

According to the American Lung Association (ALA), 42.3 million Americans are affected by asthma and/or hay fever, generally triggered by allergies or airborne allergens such as pet dander, mold, pollen and dust mites. As a result, it is important to do everything possible to improve the air we breathe inside our homes, ventilation and cleanliness being two major factors that affect indoor air quality.

According to the Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI), high-performance vacuum cleaners have a significant impact on improved indoor air quality. Vacuum cleaners also play a significant role in the life of your carpet, with certain vacuums removing and containing soil more effectively than others, helping the carpet last longer. CRI recognizes these vacuums with its Green Label Testing Program.

The Green Label Testing Program focuses on three key performance factors. First, vacuums must remove a set quantity of soil from carpet in four passes. Second, and perhaps most important to indoor air quality, is the vacuum’s ability to contain dust. Vacuums must not release more than 100 micrograms of dust particles per cubic meter of air, taking into account dust released by the brush rolls and through the filtration bag. Lastly, the CRI tests the carpet appearance retention, as vacuums should minimally affect the appearance of a carpet over the course of a year.

Central vacuum systems capture dust, dirt and allergens without stirring up microscopic particles and re-emitting them into interior spaces. “Central vacuums are up to five times more powerful than normal portable vacuums and do not recirculate any particles back into the home,” says Christian Reick-Mitrisin of Nutone.

NuTone Central Vacuum Systems are Green Label-certified and contain High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, meaning dust and bacteria are trapped better than ever before. Two different systems are available-bagged and cyclonic versions. The cyclonic version contains an easy-to-clean filter, which can be easily accessed through the door panel.

The bagged version contains the easy-on/easy-off snap-release bag change mechanism that closes the opening immediately upon removal, so what goes in stays in.

“NuTone Central Vacuum Systems are made of lightweight polymer designed to resist rust and dents,” says Reick-Mitrisin. “The vacuum canisters also provide quiet cleaning because the power units contain an internal sound suppression system and are typically located in the garage, basement or utility room and not in the general living area.”
